Insulating a Garage Floor

If you plan to turn your garage into new, finished living space, one of the first decisions you need to make concerns the floor. If the existing slab is in good shape, it is possible to install flooring over nothing more than a moisture barrier. But it always makes good sense to consider adding a layer of insulation first.

Garage slabs are usually uninsulated and can get very cold in the winter, even in relatively mild climates. That can make them very expensive to heat. There are two major ways to insulate a garage floor, and both can be done by a reasonably competent do-it-yourself or at a reasonable cost by a contractor. The first uses sleepers and rigid foam, and the second uses plywood and rigid foam.
