Seems like it's always flooding somewhere these days. The past couple of weeks I've been reading more reports of serious floods in the Midwest, and elsewhere. And, as we all know, with flooded streets come flooded basements.
Sump pumps aren't much help if your neighborhood is under several feet of water, but they can keep a basement safer and more usable the rest of the time. (See How To Install a Sump Pump.) One problem people run into with sump pumps, however, is that they stop running when the power goes out, as it often does during major storms.
That's why many people add a battery-powered backup pump to step in when the electricity is off. But there's another option that is definitely worth considering -- a water-powered pump like the Basepump model shown in the photo. It doesn't need batteries or electricity, and it can be installed easily. Prices start at $299.
For more information on the Basepump, see the company's Web site.
