Planning a Closet Storage System

If you plan to design a closet storage system for clothes, it helps to know the dimensions of the items you will be storing. Here are some average dimensions that will work for most wardrobes. The dimensions given below allow for the clothing, hanger and necessary clearance above the closet rod.

  • Folded sweater: 14” deep, 10” wide
  • Folded shirt: 14” deep, 8” wide

Women’s Clothing

  • Dress: 66” long
  • Robe: 52” long
  • Blouse (on hanger): 36” long
  • Skirt: 42” long
  • Pants: 48” long
  • Shoes: 10” deep, 7” wide

Men’s Clothing

  • Suit coat: 42” long
  • Pants (folded): 30” long
  • Pants (straight): 44” long
  • Shirt: 40” long
  • Shoes: 12” deep, 9” wide
