Garage Door Remotes and Garage Security

From , former About.com Guide

Garage door remotes offer great convenience to homeowners, but they can also provide a convenient way for burglars to get into your house. To keep your home and belongings safe and secure, follow these suggestions:
  • Always park the car in the garage, with the garage door closed.
  • If you do park the car in the driveway or on the street, lock the doors and place the remote somewhere it can't be seen (glove box, under a seat, etc.).
  • Don't leave a remote in the car. This is easiest if you get a small remote that you can carry in a purse or on a key ring.
  • If you ever notice that your remote is missing, immediately unplug the garage door opener to prevent a stranger from gaining access to your house. Then, replace and reprogram the remote.
  • When you park your car some place other than at home, don't leave anything inside the car with your address on it. Carry your registration and insurance card with you. That way, should someone break into your car, they won't be able to find your address, drive to your house, hit the button on the remote, and get into your house. Alternatively, keep the registration and insurance information in the trunk or some other place that would be difficult for a burglar to locate quickly.
