Before You Buy an Overhead Garage Ceiling Storage System

By , About.com Guide

Take advantage of that empty ceiling by adding an overhead garage storage system. This is a great way to store bulky and seasonal items. You can build your own simple ceiling storage system or buy a product made specifically for the purpose. You can find storage systems that hang from the rafters or the ceiling joists.

Individual ceiling-mounted units are available in assorted sizes and weight capacities. Most systems have an adjustable height, as the distance between the ceiling and an open garage door varies from one garage to another. It is very important that these systems be attached to joists or rafters.

Metal and Wood System

HyLoft sells metal frames for ceiling storage in sizes up to 4 x 8 feet, which can hold up to 500 pounds. For the best bargain, pass on their option to include the wood platform in your purchase. Instead, supply your own 2 x 4s—you will need seven of them, each 8-feet long.

White Grid System

OverAll Storage offers white-coated metal storage units that have a grid-like platform. They offer two sizes, which can hold up to 250 pounds and be hung up to 28 inches below ceiling height.

Steel Box Frame

The Onrax ceiling storage system is heavy-duty unit that has a steel box frame and metal grid platform. Also unique about this system is that the shelving can be hung as much as 45 inches beneath the ceiling, which would make it accessible without a ladder in most garages (though not useful above the garage door).
