Drywall Repair - Determine the Extent of Damage

Drywall repair kits are handy but unnecessary.
Drywall repair is one of the most basic DIY skills. Drywall is a great material, but it is not nearly as tough as the plaster walls and ceilings it replaced.

Drywall repair kits like those in the photograph are readily available and relatively inexpensive. But I rarely use them, simply because most repairs can be accomplished better and quicker with materials I usually have lying around the house.

The type of repair depends on the extent of the damage, so your first job is to determine the severity of injury. The following pages contain instructions on five approaches to drywall repair, each of which addresses one of the following types of damage:

  • Superficial Scratch
  • Surface Bruise
  • Small Hole
  • Medium Hole
  • Large Hole
