You will need:
- Small piece of drywall
- Keyhole saw or other small-bladed saw
- Small piece of wood (such as the 1x4 shown in the photo above)
- Drywall screws (1 inch or longer)
- Screwdriver
- Joint compound
- Drywall tape
- Taping knife
- Sandpaper
- Primer and paint
What to do:
- Cut out the damaged part of the drywall. Make the cut a clean square or rectangle.
- Slide the wood through the hole. Hold it firmly against the backside of the drywall, and then drive a screw through the face of the drywall into the backing on each side of the hole.
- Cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole. Set the drywall in the hole, and then attach it to the backing with one or two screws.
- Check that all screw heads are driven just below the surface of the drywall. Then finish the repair with tape and joint compound as explained here.
- Once the final coat of compound has been sanded, the repair is ready to be primed and painted.
