Repairing a Medium Hole in Drywall

A backing board facilitates drywall repair.
A medium hole is one that is too large to be safely repaired with a patch kit. You will need to repair this hole with a new piece of drywall. If you’ve got some drywall scraps lying around, you’re in luck. But these days you can usually find a small piece of drywall for sale at Lowe’s and Home Depot.

You will need:

  • Small piece of drywall
  • Keyhole saw or other small-bladed saw
  • Small piece of wood (such as the 1x4 shown in the photo above)
  • Drywall screws (1 inch or longer)
  • Screwdriver
  • Joint compound
  • Drywall tape
  • Taping knife
  • Sandpaper
  • Primer and paint

What to do:

  1. Cut out the damaged part of the drywall. Make the cut a clean square or rectangle.

  2. Slide the wood through the hole. Hold it firmly against the backside of the drywall, and then drive a screw through the face of the drywall into the backing on each side of the hole.

  3. Cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole. Set the drywall in the hole, and then attach it to the backing with one or two screws.

  4. Check that all screw heads are driven just below the surface of the drywall. Then finish the repair with tape and joint compound as explained here.

  5. Once the final coat of compound has been sanded, the repair is ready to be primed and painted.
