Extra Storage Tip #1 - Portable Storage Units
Ever wish that you could rent some extra storage for a few weeks or months, then return it when you were done? That's what you can get with a portable storage unit. They are like having someone drop a storage shed in your driveway, which you are free to use for as long as necessary. When you no longer need the extra storage, you call for pickup. These extra storage units are also good when moving. Especially when you need some place to store your belongings temporarily and then transport them to your new home, these units are ideal. Rather than having to pack the stuff into a self-storage unit, then repack it into a moving van, with a portable storage unit you only pack once. When it's time to move, you call for the truck to pick up your unit and take it to your new home.
Extra storage is sometimes needed when remodeling a house. Again, hauling your belongings to a self-storage unit is one low-cost possibility. But what if you'd rather keep things a little closer to home, accessible whenever needed? In that case, a temporary, portable storage unit set on your property is worth considering.
PODS and Smartbox are two established names in temporary, portable storage units.
Extra Storage Tip #2 - Self-Storage Units
One of the most ubiquitous forms of extra storage can be found in self-storage units. The self-storage industry has been booming in recent years. Business was even brisk during the recent recession, as foreclosures and downsizing hit large numbers of families hard, often forcing them to send their extra stuff to self-storage units. In many areas, there are a large number of self-storage facilities to choose from. Not surprisingly, some facilities are much better than others. Though many people have had pleasant experiences finding extra storage in a self-storage facility, some have encountered nightmares. Moisture damage, rodents, theft . . . for every story of a pleasant experience, there seems to be a nightmare to counter it. So it pays to shop around. Here are a few things you should look for and compare:
- Price and discounts
- Cleanliness and smell
- Climate control
- Size
- Location
- Security
- Customer service
- Free use of truck and other incentives
Specifically, how secure does the door look? Does it close securely? Are there gaps big enough for water or mice to pass through? Are the walls and ceilings free of cracks or holes?
Self-storage units that are protected by electronic gates are nice, but remember that those gates won't protect your goods from others who use the same facility. If you have to supply your own lock, invest in a top quality padlock. Cheap locks can be cut or broken easily.
